Stepping back in time

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

The most memorable and cheesy line from the 1997 Movie “Titanic” where Kate, arms outstretched, held By Leonardo saying “I’m The King Of the World!” - Well, Who wants to be the king of the world? Yep, Not many - unless you are an evil meglomainiac seeking world domination! But regaridng the other part - standing at the Bow of a great ship with the wind in your hair - more realistic.

At the Turn of the 20th Century the only way to travel from one continent to another was by Ocean liner, something that was surpassed buy the Jet aircraft. When it was an Ocean Journey of several days, the catch phrase was “Getting there is half the fun”.  At least they got that right - and we certainly see that this is still the case, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to get onto a Holiday Cruise ship.  Now, with A cruise ship, getting back is the other half of the fun as well!

Taking a Cruise or even considering one then a cruise leaving from Norfolk puts you in easy reach of a lot of wonderful and exotic holiday destinations such as the Caribbean or Bermuda. Well, they are not “next door” but close as far as ships go.  A modern day cruise ship is a far cry from the passenger liners of yesteryear - you get everything and some these days, from restuarant eating, Island stopovers and dancing that goes all night. We cannot all afford a round the world trip on the QEII but that doesn’t mean that the folks at Cruise Norfolk cannot find something that fits your budget.

CI Travel website is all about taking holidays on a cruise ship and they have a heap of info on various destinations, attractions and much more.

Getting Hot and Steamy

Friday, June 1st, 2007

After a workout at the Gym or even at the end of a long week at work there is not many better ways to unwind than by slipping into your own Sauna.

A sauna is nothing more than an area (in most cases a room) with high heat and low humidity. The high heat causes you to sweat, and the low humidity means that your sweat will rapidly evaporate. It is this exchange of liquid (sweat) out of your skin that gives a wonderful cleansing feeling. Now, most people think of taking a sauna at the gym after a workout and don’t really think about building their own. I have only ever had a sauna after a gym workout followed by a quick dip in a cold pool! The Sauna does leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Your own Sauna is easier than you think and it doesn’t need to be as large as the ones at a gym. You can purchase a Sauna Kit and build your own or get a pre-fab Sauna and simply assemble. I thought that A sauna would be something that is expensive to run but soon found out that this is not really the case at all. The Saunafin website is not only about selling Sauna kits but provides a heap of general info. The most useful info is that it shows just how cheap it is to run your own sauna. Now, the reason it is cheap is that typically you only need to turn it on for a few hours a week, unlike a Gym that have their sauna going all the time.

The Saunafin website is certainly not the prettiest site to look at, but it is functional. Everything you want can be easily found, from the Contact page to the online showroom and galleries. The Contact info provided is exactly what you want - A mail address, e-mail form and Telephone numbers. The site has a good balance between general information such as Sauna Health benefits and their products that they offer.

In Touch on the move

logo_mobilesuk.gif

Do you still know someone who doesn’t have a cellphone? How many people do you know that has more than 1? Well, I can answer these questions - First, hardly anyone I know doesn’t have a phone and a lot of people I know have more than 1.

We have all gone thru the hassle of finding the best phone and plan at some stage, and if you live in the UK and are looking for your first or next mobile phone the logical place to start looking is from the comfort of your own home. You can easily compare the plans, check out the latest handsets such as the LG Prada without getting the hassle and hard sell from a “Sales Assistant” - who really don’t often assist. You can easily compare what the different phone companies such as Orange offer and find a plan that suits your budget and lifestyle.

When dealing with someone - especially someone online it is always a good practice to ensure that they have a solid reputation and easy to find contact info. Well, the fact that they have been around for 11 years is a pretty good indicator regarding their reputation, and there is plenty of contact details to be found on the website.  Now, the website, of course the primary function is to be the online store. They provide a “virtual sales Assistant” (who by the way is not pushy) in the form of articles and information on all the products and services that are on offer. The site is easy to read and gives a pretty good description of what is on offer.  With a header and left colum navigation there is plenty of space to read the pages and see what is on offer.

Alternative

Friday, April 13th, 2007

In the Western World we have been putting our faith into the Medical profession whose skills and knowledge goes back around 150-200 years. Some people in the West are starting to “discover” what has been going on in the “East” for thousands of years and are starting to turn to all sorts of Natural healing methods as an alternative to “popping a pill” or “slicing it out”. Now, while it is an interesting subject in itself to debate on the pro’s and con’s of Medicine that is not what we are doing here!

One of the Eastern Ancient Healing methods is Acupuncture and New York Acupuncture have set up a website to promote their business. My first thought on Acupuncture is that it involves someone sticking needles into you and you end up looking like a pincusion! This is a gross generalisation and only partially based in the facts. Yes, Acupuncture does involve inserting needles into the body, but it is done at very specific points - and there is little to no discomfort when receiving a treatment.

Now, the website. The site has a comment on their homepage saying it has recently been re-designed. I had no idea as to what it looked like so I took a peek of how it looked in the past thanks to the waybackmachine. This site has been around for a long, long time and In the past it was not that great! They have done some great improvements to the layout and now the site actually provides some great content as well. They provide a little bit of general information on howAcupuncture can help in the treatment of various conditions. Some of them I had heard about - Acupuncture for Arthritis is one example and others such as an alternative to IVF - Infertility Acupuncture I had not heard about..

Of course, a site like this caon only provide general information and act as a bit of an introduction to how Acupuncture might be able to help you. This is where it really comes back around to what you put your trust in - the 200 year old Western Medicine or many Thousands of years of Eastern knowledge and treatments.

Need a Little Love’n?

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Have you ever written or received a little love note from your special someone? Well if you have or you are thinking that you will then you can find a heap of inspiration for your romantic notes at romance for everyone.

Come on, face it, everyone needs a little love in their life and if you don’t then just think of how lucky you might get if you grab a bit of inspiration and impress that special someone you have had your eye on! Yes, this is a cheap and tacky shot, but it reminds me of a slogan on a coffee cup of one of my mates - “Ma always said you can’t buy love, but she didn’t say you couldn’t rent it by the hour”

The site has a fairly large collection of love notes and letters, and truthfully, I did not read them all. Sure, I read a fair few of them and most are quite short - I guess that is what a note is all about - a short message. While the website had a heap of content and with the header it left no doubt as to the site you are on I did find the navigation a little bit haphazard. A little bit of effort in maybe putting together a bit more of a navigation bar under the header would make the site much easier to use. The default font is not too small which makes reading on screen quite easy.

Just one last thing - remember, if when you decide to copy one of the notes for your own, change it a tad - the last thing you want is for that special someone to google the contents of your note and find it! You will go from hero to Zero in a flash!

Rustic Girls

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

rustic2.jpg

Sisters are doin’ it for themselves - it is not a Spice Grils song, but a philosophy for a lot of Girls.  The typical jokes about men never asking for directions is what Rustic Girls is all about - they have a whole lot of articles with useful info so that Girls CAN do it for themselves!

The website is what I would call Rustic - as it has that distinctive 1999 look and feel to it.  It is very minimilaistic.  Now, this is not a bad thing in this case - as what the site is all about is providing useful and quality content.  As the content is useful, then the desgin can be olde worlde and you still have a useful site.  It could do with a little bit of work on the navigation to make the site easier to use - but what site couldn’t do with further additions and improvements?

The Articles are mostly about DIY & Home Improvement and are written is a way that is easy to read and understand.  They cover such broad areas such as Inside your home, Outside your home and Yard & Garden.   I am telling you, that even though the target Audience for the Articles are Women, there is a lot of uselful info for the handyman as well (only if he would bother to read the instructions).

A random article from the front page - I selected Solar power for home and Garden.  The article was about 2 screens long for me and broken up into paragraphs with Bold headings.   The info was all relevent to the topic, presented in a way that is easy to read on-screen and would probably print out just fine as well.  The default text size is a good size - not real small like some sites.  All of the articles are of a similar format except where a topic contains a lot of info.  in these cases, they are broken up into more than 1 page which does make it easier to sit down and actually read.

As we said, the main focus are the DIY Articles and info, but on the homepage of the site there are also other general lifestyle/home hints type of info.  So, go on Girls, read up and you might just surprise yourself to find out how easy some of this stuff is!

Posters

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

5dollarposters_logo.gif

Looking for Cheap Posters? Even if you are not, you might want to simply browse the hundreds that are available.  Posters are a great way to put your mark on your space, such as your room, or even your college dorm.

The Website is not real flash and fancy, it is all about letting you view the posters and making it easy to buy them.  It would not win any beauty contests, but hey, you are looking for a cheap poster and looking to get it as easy as possible after all.  Depending on your interests, you can choose from Music, Movies and TV and several other categories.  If you are really keen, you can even browse all 30 pages with 18 posters per page of every single poster on offer.  All the contact details are available, phone, email and online form in case you need them.

Now, last time I checked, $5 didn’t buy you a whole lot, and a poster for $5 sounds like a pretty good deal to me.  What makes it even better is the shipping is cheap as well.  Buying multiple posters at the same time saves you heaps on shipping, and if you add in the 10% discount for buying 3 you can see that you can change the look of your space for not much more than you would spend on a burger and fries for lunch.

Now no self respecting college student would want to be without a classic poster - This poster will give you a huge incentive to get that study stuff done so you can get to the next party!
